XpeditioNZ SUB60 Roof Tent

Over the past three years the SUB60 has emerged as one of the most proven own-brand hard shell roof tents in NZ at its price point.

Let's get very honest about roof tents!

NZ buyers have largely woken up to the reality NZ made/designed roof tents are but a myth. With the exception of the the premium global brands that we import (EEZI-AWN and Quick Pitch) almost everything else on the NZ market is a generic Chinese roof tent, many with a 'Kiwi' / 'Aussie' sounding brand stamped on it.

The only Chinese made roof tent we sell, the SUB60 is undoubtedly one of the best in this class and priced very competitively. It is made with the very same shell as used on Feldon Shelter hard shells and one Kiwi Camping model. While some brands try to convince you these tents are super premium, best on market... we won't. The truth is these tents are very good (at the price point we offer it) and may be all many campers need. But we won't try to convince you this can compete head on with the more expensive roof tents in our Quick Pitch and EEZI-AWN product ranges - those are in a different league. That said, here's what sets the SUB60 apart from 99% of other Chinese origin clamshell roof tents:

1. 225cm external length chassis giving internal mattress length 217cm. Many first time buyers don't realise how long clamshell roof tents need to be for an average height Kiwi to lay straight in them. The foot end of the clamshell is inaccessible, so the many roof tents sold in NZ that are only around 210cm to 215cm external length just aren't suited to sleeping the average height Kiwi. They're more an Asian size. Despite this, most Chinese clamshell roof tents sold in NZ are still too short... not the SUB60! Don't underestimate the importance of this.
2. 60mm high density mattress with anti-condensation matting beneath. We're still seeing mid and high priced on market with inadequate 40mm mattresses, or 50mm mattresses over slat bases. The 60mm mattress in the SUB60 offers a good density that's ample to keep most of you much more comfortable. 
3. Real solid honeycomb panel for a base, not slats! 
4. 280gsm Polycotton canvas, never polyester, nor fancy sounding canvas names... that are really just polyester. The SUB60 features the best 280gsm polycotton canvas we can source out of China. No Chinese canvas compares to the South African woven canvas used on our more expensive EEZI-AWN and Quick Pitch branded roof tents, but the canvas on the SUB60 far surpasses canvas used on most other Chinese origin roof tents.
5. Fly is also polycotton - not polyester. If we haven't yet made it clear, polyester is not a good fabric to use on aluminium shell roof tents... yet some brands only offer all polyester everywhere. Polyester is just cheap and buyers should avoid it in hard shell roof tents.
6. Leading quality shell construction at this price point. No rivets hold the corner sections, and ultimately the tent, together. SUB60's are constructed using moden auto body bonding materials and methods. In the past two years a number of highly similar looking Chinese roof tents that had riveted corners imported to NZ have failed. 
7. Lighter weight. Approx 69kg. Some similar looking hard shells with steel tops are unneccessarily heavy. 
8. Roof load compatible. Roof load bar kits available.
9. Internal lighting. 1m LED light strip included. Runs from a powerbank.
10. Super slim design: Just 160mm tall when closed. Minimal drag on the open road. At this thickness a sleeping bag may be left in the tent when closed, but not a pillow or the ladder. 
11. Awning brackets available: Mount light awnings (15kg max) directly to the side of the shell with specially profiled awning brackets.
